Biography

Gingger Shankar was born Niranjani Subramaniam in Los Angeles and was raised between the United States and India. She is the daughter of violinist L. Subramaniam and vocalist Viji Subramaniam, and grew up in a family deeply connected to Indian classical and global concert traditions.

She learnt singing, dance, violin, and piano as a child and began performing professionally as a teenager. Her work moves between pop, rock, electronic, world, and Carnatic-rooted idioms.

Shankar performs on the ten-string double violin, an instrument associated with the wider L. Shankar family tradition. She has contributed to film scores and multimedia projects, including work connected to Circumstance, The Passion of the Christ, The Forbidden Kingdom, and Himalaya Song.
