The journey
Biography
K. S. Vasuki was born on 24 June 1957 in Kanakapura, to K. S. Parvatamma and K. N. Satyanarayana Shastry. His musical journey began at a young age and has continued for more than six decades, encompassing learning, teaching, performing and a lifelong association with the violin. At the age of 10, he began learning Carnatic vocal music under the guidance of Vidwan Vedantachar. Around the same time, he received his initial training in violin from Vidwan Narasimiah of Kanakapura. With dedication and perseverance, he completed the Junior and Senior examinations in both Vocal and Violin by the age of 20. His early professional engagement with music began at Bal Bhavan, where he joined as a part-time violin instructor. He served there for four years, gaining valuable experience as both a musician and teacher. His desire to pursue music at an advanced level led him to undertake a Master’s degree in Music, which he completed in 1983 with distinction. He is also a Commerce graduate from Rural College, Kanakapura. A significant chapter in his musical development was his long association with Guru Ganakalabhooshana, veteran violin vidwan Anoor S. Ramakrishna. Over several years of tutelage, he received valuable guidance in the nuances of violin playing and the Carnatic musical tradition. This association played an important role in shaping his approach to music and strengthening his foundation as a violinist. After completing his higher studies, he was appointed as a Music Teacher in Kendriya Vidyalayas. During his 24 years of service, he worked in Kendriya Vidyalayas in different parts of the country, sharing his knowledge of music with young learners. His students brought recognition to their institutions by securing First Prize at Dehradun and Second Prize on two occasions, at Varanasi and Jabalpur, in music competitions. In 2009, he took voluntary retirement from the Kendriya Vidyalaya system. He then continued to devote himself actively to music as a violinist and accompanist, accompanying several senior and upcoming artistes across the country. Over the years, he has participated in numerous concerts and music conferences and has also provided violin accompaniment for dance performances, reflecting his versatility as a musician. His musical work has also reached a wider audience through programmes on All India Radio, Doordarshan, Udaya TV and Shankara TV, among others. He has obtained a B Grade from All India Radio (AIR), marking his recognition as a performing musician. Teaching has remained a meaningful part of his musical life. Over the years, he has trained several students in violin and continues to guide students even today. Through this, he has been able to share the knowledge and experience gathered over decades of learning and performance. His contribution to music has been recognised through several honours, including the PMMA Music Legendary Award from Pyramid Valley in 2021, Naadanugraha Sri from Anugraha Maha Vidyalaya, and the Piteelu Kalabhooshana honour from Sharada Gana Sabha. From his early lessons in vocal music and violin in Kanakapura to his years as an educator, his subsequent career as a performing violinist and accompanist, and his continuing role as a teacher, his life has been closely intertwined with music. His journey reflects a quiet and sustained dedication to the art form, enriched by the guidance of his gurus and by decades of experience in teaching and performance. Even today, he remains actively connected with music, continuing to play the violin and share his knowledge with the next generation.
