Carnatic violin
Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan
Biography
Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan was born in Kunnakudi in present-day Tamil Nadu and trained under his father Ramaswamy Sastri, a Harikatha exponent and musician. The violin entered his life early, and his identity became inseparable from the town whose name he carried.
He first built his career as an accompanist to leading Carnatic musicians including Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, and Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer. He later became a star solo performer with a highly recognisable, dramatic style.
From the 1970s, Kunnakudi's concerts drew large audiences by moving between classical raga elaboration, devotional music, Tamil songs, and film music. This made him an important figure in widening access to Carnatic violin for listeners outside the specialist sabha circuit.
He also composed for films and received honours including Kalaimamani and Padma Shri.
