Biography

Madurai Subramanya Ayyar was born in 1897 to Sundaramma and later passed away in Madras. His gurus were his maternal grandfather Nyshadam Seshaiah and later Sangita Kalanidhi Karur Chinnaswamaiah.

He was a very popular violinist and could claim descent from the family of Tyagaraja. His shishya parampara includes G. N. Balasubramanian and Lakshminarayana Sastry.

He served for 14 years as Professor of Violin at Annamalai University. Later, he taught violin at Kalakshetra for two years.

In the 1940s, he became Violin Lecturer at the University of Madras, extending his influence through institutional teaching as well as performance. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971.
