Malaikottai Govindaswami Pillai

1879 - 1931Original stylist and full-bow innovator

Biography

Born at Achyuthamangalam on the banks of the river Mudicondan in Thanjavur District, Govindaswami Pillai had his initial training in vocal music and violin under Umayalpuram Panchapakesa Ayyar. He later trained under Ettayapuram Kothandapani Bhagavathar, brother of the renowned Ramachandra Bhagavathar.

Renowned for his vibrant playing style, Govindaswami Pillai could also play the flute and mridangam. His graceful touches, polished playing, sweetness and purity of notes, superb rendering of kritis, and ease across three octaves and three speeds made him one of the great violinists of his times.

Prof. P. Sambamurthi observed that Govindaswami Pillai had an innate artistic consciousness and looked to both the intellectual and emotional aspects of music. His playing was marked by brilliance, originality, rich alapanas, kalpana swaras, and a full bowing technique.

Like vainikas, he used to sing to the tune of his violin playing. His period coincided with the later life of the legendary Tirukodikaval Krishna Iyer, and Papa Venkataramayya was among his important disciples.
