The journey

Biography

Sri Nedumangad Sivanandan, the renowned Carnatic violinist, was born on 30th June 1935 into a family deeply rooted in music. His father, Sri Neyyattinkara Vasudevan Pillai, was a respected figure in the field, and his mother, Smt. Dakshayani Amma, was blessed with the birth of a child who would go on to become a musical legend. Sivanandan began his musical journey under the tutelage of his father, learning both vocal music and violin. His early talent and dedication soon led to his debut as an accompanist in concerts. Following his schooling, he joined the prestigious Swathi Thirunal Music Academy in Thiruvananthapuram, where he completed the Ganabhooshanam course with distinction. After the passing of his father, he continued advanced training under Sri Viruthunagar Ganapathiya Pillai, a disciple of the legendary Sri Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai. Under this distinguished lineage, Sivanandan refined his skills and went on to perform as a graded artist with All India Radio (AIR), where his artistry was widely recognized. He joined government service as a music teacher at the young age of 19 and served until his retirement in 1990. During his career, he was a member of the Examination Board for Ganabhooshanam and served on the AIR Audition Board at the Thrissur station. His association with AIR and Doordarshan continues to this day, and his violin continues to enchant audiences. For over 45 years, Sri Sivanandan has been a regular participant in the prestigious Guruvayur Chembai Sangeetholsavam, and for the last 25 years, he has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the violin section during the festival — a testament to his expertise and leadership. His distinctive style and emotive playing were also featured in the Malayalam film “Anandabhairavi”, directed by Jayaraj, where he performed on screen. His enduring 62-year musical journey has placed him among the foremost violinists of the modern Carnatic tradition. A unique and cherished feature of his performances is the “Violin Trio”, where he performs alongside his daughter and grandson — representing three generations of musical excellence. His entire family, including his siblings, are actively involved in music and cultural arts. ________________________________________ Honours and Awards • Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (2000) • Nadachinthamani Award – Nada Laya Pravah Academy, Thrissur (1998) • Sangeetha Ratna – Arumukham Pillai Memorial Sangeetha Sabha, Alappuzha (1999) • Madhura Gana Sudha Award – Madurai Esaivizha (2000) • Sangeethapoornasree Award – Thrippunithura Jayaprakash Sangeetha Sabha (2005) • Sangeetha Thilak – Paramekkavu Ekadasi Sangeetholsavam, Thrissur (1990) • Sangeetha Shreshta – Swati Thirunal Sangeetha Sabha, Alappuzha (2009) • Nadacharya Award – Annamanada Agni Cultural Academy • Sangeetha Ratna – Thirunakkara Viswarupa Sangeetha Sabha, Kottayam
