The journey

Biography

Violin Padma Shankar is a distinguished Carnatic violinist, vocalist, performer and music educator, known for her expressive artistry, versatility and ability to connect classical musicianship with contemporary musical expression. She received her advanced training in violin under the legendary violin maestro Sri Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, imbibing the highly refined Lalgudi bani, and was also privileged to learn vocal music under the renowned Padma Vibhushan Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. She holds a Master’s degree in Music from the University of Madras. A Kalaimamani awardee, Padma Shankar has also been awarded Top Grade by All India Radio (Prasar Bharati), one of the highest professional recognitions accorded to Indian musicians. She has been an A-grade artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan and has performed extensively across India and internationally. Her musical journey encompasses Carnatic classical music, film music, devotional and semi-classical repertoire, contemporary music and fusion. Her performances are marked by a strong emphasis on melody, expression, tonal beauty and emotional communication. Padma Shankar has performed on prestigious stages in India and abroad, including major concert venues in the United States. She has also been part of significant collaborative projects bringing together Indian classical traditions and contemporary musical contexts, including the Ravi Shankar Ensemble’s USA debut tour. Alongside her performing career, she has contributed extensively to music education. She has worked with Shankar Mahadevan Academy for over a decade and continues to teach and mentor students through her educational initiatives, including Swaraved. Her work as a performer extends beyond conventional concert formats through Vaadini, her live music ensemble, which presents carefully curated violin-led music for concerts, weddings, private celebrations and corporate events. Padma Shankar’s artistic philosophy centres on making music accessible without compromising its depth. Her playing seeks to preserve the soul of the melody while allowing the violin to communicate with the warmth, nuance and expressiveness of the human voice. Through performance, education and collaboration, she continues to contribute to the evolving landscape of Indian violin music while remaining deeply rooted in the classical tradition.
