Carnatic violin
Semmangudi Narayanaswamy Iyer
Biography
Semmangudi Narayanaswamy Iyer was the nephew of Tirukodikaval Krishna Iyer and cousin of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. He trained under the legendary Tirukodikaval Krishna Iyer and became a popular violin accompanist of his times.
He was also a vocalist and was known for his chaste and orthodox style. During concerts, he would sit facing the audience by the side of the main performer.
Semmangudi R. Srinivasa Iyer was his student. Srinivasa Iyer recalled that Narayanaswamy Iyer began his musical training on a Vijayadasami day, taught him varnams, and took him along to many concerts.
These concert experiences became an important part of Srinivasa Iyer's early musical formation, even though Narayanaswamy Iyer later moved to Kumbakonam.
