The journey

Biography

Biography Sri T. K. V. Ramanujacharyulu hails from a traditional family of musicians. He had his early training from his father and first guru, Sri TK Ramanujacharyulu, a flautist. He later received his formal and advanced training from his maternal uncle, violin maestro, composer, and vocal scholar Sri N. Ch. Krishnamacharyulu in the gurukula style. It was here that Sri TKV, as he is fondly called, mastered all the advanced techniques and nuances in Carnatic music. He belongs to the lineage of Sri Thyagaraja's direct sishya parampara. In 1979, he won the first prize in the All India Radio Music Competition. He had toured the United States in 1994, with Sri TV Sankaranarayanan. He was awarded the “Senior Violinist Award 1997-98” from The Music Academy, Chennai, and has been a regular performer in the Academy for several decades now. He received the best accompanist award from the Krishna Ganasabha, Chennai for the year 1978.. Sri TKV has performed in all the major sabhas in India. His performances are highly acclaimed in India and abroad. He is a highly sought-after accompanist for all top-ranking musicians in the earlier generations as well as the current generation. He has accompanied all top-grade artistes such as Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, M. Balamurali Krishna, Voleti Venkateswarlu, D.K. Pattammal, D.K. Jayaraman, K.V. Narayana Swami, Dr. S. Ramanathan, N. Ramani, Dr. S. Balachander, T.V. Sankaranarayanan, T.N. Seshagopalan, etc. just a name a few. Sri TKV retired from AIR Trichy as a top-grade violinist and vocalist after 37 years of distinguished service. During his tenure at AIR, his programs on “Thyagaraja Krithi Vilakkam” and his introductory music lessons were immensely popular. Sri TKV is known for his graceful violin playing, embodying technical excellence and sensitivity. He has an exquisite Gayaki-style violin playing, rooted in tradition. His bowing technique is par excellence. The distinguishing features of his music are bhava-laden classicism and intellectual finesse. Hallmarks of his violin are aesthetic sweetness in rendition, sruthi and swarasthana suddham, sunaadham, fertile imagination, ‘visranthi’ or meaningful pauses, and refrained virtuosity. He has set several ancient Alwar-Pasurams (devotional verses), Annamacharya's compositions on Ahobilam, and Mahaakavi Bharathiyar's compositions etc. to music and was well received with critical acclaim. He has trained several up-and-coming vocalists and violinists and is well regarded as a nurturing guru to his students.
