V. G. Jog

1922 - 2004Hindustani violin soloist and pedagogue

Biography

Vishnu Govind Jog was born in Maharashtra and began serious musical study as a child. He trained with major musicians including S. N. Ratanjankar and Allauddin Khan, while also studying formally at Marris College of Music, now Bhatkhande Music Institute, in Lucknow.

Jog absorbed ideas from the Gwalior, Agra, and Bakhale lineages and developed a style that gave the violin a strong Hindustani grammar. His work is often described as central to bringing the violin into the North Indian classical concert mainstream.

He taught for a period, worked with All India Radio from 1953, and performed widely in India and abroad. His international appearances included major New York venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Madison Square Garden.

Among his honours were the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1980 and the Padma Bhushan in 1983.
