Gagan Chandra Chatterjee

1890 - 1949Senia gharana violinist and gatkari innovator

Biography

Gagan Chandra Chatterjee was born in Allahabad in 1890. He learnt Hindustani classical music through the Senia gharana, studying sarod with Ustad Keramatullah Khan and also learning from Lachhmandas Munimji and Pran Krishna Chattopadhyay.

Rather than modelling violin only on vocal music, Chatterjee adapted instrumental techniques associated with sitar and sarod to the violin. His playing is remembered for full alaap-jor-jhala treatment and for widening the instrument's North Indian classical vocabulary.

He performed at music conferences of his time and made a small number of recordings credited to G. C. Chatterjee. His best-known students included Sriram Srivastava and Joi Srivastava.
