Biography

Pandit Joi Srivastava was born in Allahabad on January 1, 1930. He learnt Hindustani classical violin from Gagan Chandra Chatterjee and later studied with Ustad Alauddin Khan.

He became recognised as a prodigy before the age of twenty, taught at the University of Allahabad and Kala Bharati Allahabad, and later moved to Delhi to join All India Radio as a regular artiste.

After retiring from All India Radio in 1987, Srivastava taught at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. His style extended Chatterjee's gat-oriented violin language and influenced later musicians, including his grandson Sharat Chandra Srivastava.
