Biography

VVS Murari (Violinist | Violist | Educator | Art Entrepreneur) A Legacy of Music: Vadakkencheri Srikrishna Murari, popularly known as VVS Murari, is an accomplished violinist, violist, educator and art entrepreneur, representing the fourth generation of an illustrious family of musicians. His musical journey was shaped by his father and guru, the legendary violinist ‘Nadayogi’ VV Subrahmanyam, and further enriched by the guidance of the doyen of Carnatic music, ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. His grandfather, Vadakkencheri Veeraraghava Iyer, and mother, Janaki VVS, also played important roles in nurturing his musical sensibilities. A Prodigious Beginning: Murari made his solo debut at the age of 10 on December 15, 1986, at The Music Academy, Madras, accompanied by mridangam maestro ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. This early milestone marked the beginning of a distinguished career spanning four decades. Known for his lucid and sensitive raga interpretation, Murari combines tradition, discipline and artistic refinement. As an accompanist, his humility and musical sensitivity enable him to complement and elevate the principal artist while retaining his own distinctive voice. A Distinguished Career: Over the years, Murari has shared the stage with some of the most celebrated names in Carnatic music, including DK Pattammal, Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, KJ Yesudas, TV Gopalakrishnan, TK Govinda Rao, N. Ramani, PS Narayanaswamy, TV Sankaranarayanan, TN Seshagopalan, Trichur V. Ramachandran, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, OS Thyagarajan, Aruna Sairam, Bombay Jayashri, Sudha Raghunathan, and many other eminent vocalists and instrumentalists. He has also collaborated with leading percussion maestros including Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Palghat R. Raghu, Trichy Sankaran, TK Murthy, Vellore Ramabadran, Guruvayur Dorai, Karaikudi Mani, Vikku Vinayakram, Tiruvarur Bhathavathsalam and others. His versatility as both violinist and violist has established him as a respected musician in the Carnatic tradition. Innovation & Creative Endeavors: Beyond performance, Murari has explored dance dramas, ballets, music productions, composition and fusion music. His 1999 album East of Salzburg, released by the HMV group, brought together Carnatic and Western classical traditions. Through his ensemble NEOVIBES, he has presented live fusion concerts in India. He has also collaborated with Magic Factory on advertising films, television projects and short films, and composed music for the 40th anniversary production of Australia-based Bharatam Dance Company’s Mariamman in 2013. One of his most significant innovations is the Carnatic Philharmonic Orchestra, which brings Western classical and South Indian classical musicians together while preserving the identity and integrity of both traditions. Premiered at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival in 2015 with more than 75 young North American artists, it was presented again in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2017 with nearly 100 participants. Murari also pioneered Panchamukhi, an innovative production integrating five facets of Indian classical music, dance and Western classical traditions, including a unique six-part a cappella arrangement within a Carnatic framework. The production has been presented at festivals in Toronto and Cleveland. Guru & Mentor: As an educator, Murari encourages students to develop imagination, intellect and creativity while building their musical foundation through trust, discipline and mutual respect. His students across India, the USA, UK and Canada include accomplished performers and emerging musicians. His teaching extends beyond technique, inspiring young artists to understand music as both a rigorous discipline and a creative form of expression. Philanthropy & Cultural Service: Murari is deeply committed to supporting musicians and traditional artists, particularly those whose livelihoods have been affected by economic hardship. Dakshinotsavam: Launched in December 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dakshinotsavam identified and supported lesser-known Carnatic musicians from southern India. Murari personally contributed and mobilized funds that were distributed among 150 musicians from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, providing both financial assistance and artistic visibility. Chalakudy Mahotsavam: Since 2022, Murari has curated Chalakudy Mahotsavam, an open-air festival celebrating Kerala’s traditional and folk art forms. The festival has provided opportunities for more than 250 artists, helping sustain lesser-known artistic communities while bringing Kerala’s cultural heritage to wider audiences. Supporting Artists: Through his concerts, festivals and productions, Murari has created opportunities for more than 600 musicians and artists, helping them reach new audiences and pursue their careers. Mangala Isai Vizha: His curation of Mangala Isai Vizha, presented during the December Music Festival season, provides a dedicated platform for the Nadaswaram and Thavil community and contributes to the preservation and promotion of these traditional art forms. VVS Foundation & SaMaa Arts: As founder of VVS Foundation and SaMaa Arts, Murari works to promote Indian classical music and the arts internationally. He actively identifies promising young artists and provides them opportunities to perform in India and North America. His initiatives also support established full-time traditional instrumentalists, including practitioners of instruments such as kanjira and ghatam, by creating opportunities for international concert tours and collaborations. Murari is also a founding member and State Secretary for Kerala of the Global Carnatic Musicians Association (GCMA), India, an organization dedicated to protecting the professional interests and welfare of Carnatic musicians irrespective of age, caste, creed, gender or nationality.
